Circus Camp

Circus Camp for Kids 2010
From Monday, June 14th to Thursday, June 17th, 2010, Tsunami on the Square will host its sixth annual Circus Camp for Kids (ages 6-14) at Prescott Mile High Middle School (PMHMS). The mission of Circus Camp is to foster personal confidence and physical skills in youth ages six and up through fun and challenging experiences in the performing arts, to foster mentorship from local and national artists, and to strengthen
and enrich the community through connecting volunteerism, arts and youth.
Over the course of fourteen hours over four days, up to 100 participants will warm up together and take part in small group workshops. These workshops will include stilt walking, costume design, mask making, hula hoop dancing, acronastix (creative gymnastics) and African drumming. Circus Camp participants will have the opportunity to showcase their new skills with a performance on the Tsunami on the Square main stage, an annual festival with over 6000 in attendance! Participants will also be encouraged to take part in the festival by marching in the parade, volunteering while in costume during the event and participating in the Children’s Cove activities throughout the day.
Tsunami on the Square and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Yavapai County will continue working together to make the camp free to all the “littles” in the BBBS program.
Non-BBBS families who lack the funds can volunteer in exchange for their children’s tuition. All other community participants pay a nominal fee of $12.00/day. Circus Camp workshops are taught by visiting artists who will be performing at the Tsunami on the Square festival, as well as by prominent local artists and arts educators.
This year we are changing the schedule and structure of the camp. First, in an effort to improve the age-appropriateness of the education presented in the workshops, we will keep similar aged children together for the workshops. To do this there will be three main age groups: 6-8, 9-11, 12-14. Up to this year, all participants were involved together in whichever workshops they choose. The line of thinking was that there is rarely a venue for kids of all ages to interact. (One benefit was that siblings could stay together throughout the whole camp if they wanted.) In practice however, the adolescents for the most part don’t like being mixed in with the “children”. Secondly, this year we will have two shorter workshops instead of one long workshop. Hopefully this will have the effect of the participants getting exposed to twice as many arts and staying more engaged for the full duration of the workshop. These changes are an attempt to learn, grow and improve through past experience.
